About the Department

Academic Technology and User Services (ATUS) is the face of information technology at Western with several IT service desks as well as support for teaching and learning.  Our Teaching, Learning and Technology offices support faculty and students with classroom media, specialized labs and media spaces, laptop and AV loans, support for the Learning Management System, and faculty development opportunities.  We pride ourselves in our excellent customer support and considerate stewardship of university resources.

About the Position

As the Classroom Services Support Technician, you will play a vital role in enhancing the learning environment at Western Washington University. This position oversees the ATUS Equipment Loan Desk, ensuring smooth equipment checkouts, coordinating a team of dedicated student workers, and managing inventory. You will work closely with other university AV professionals, providing essential equipment delivery and technical support for special events and videoconferencing. In this role, you will also serve as the primary contact for emergency support in our general-use classrooms and labs, helping to ensure that technical challenges are quickly resolved. Specifically, this position: 

  • Provides tier-1 technical support and advice to faculty, staff, and students regarding University AV equipment (such as Classroom computers, laptops, video recorders, audio recorders, and/or still photography) 

  • Assists in managing the inventory, routine maintenance, and checkout of portable media equipment. Also assists in the operation of the checkout software system including tracking missing items, billing patrons, maintaining the inventory of the collection, ensuring proper cataloging and labeling of items, organizing reservations for university instructors, reporting on equipment utilization, and training student employees. 

  • Assists the Classroom Services Manager in coordinating student staff at the equipment loan desk including student scheduling, hiring, and timesheets. 

  • Actively monitors the Classroom Services telephone, email accounts, Teams accounts, and Jira ticketing system, and responds to customer questions and requests.   

  • Supports the technical requirements of university special events and videoconferencing that require media equipment (such as laptop computers, webcams, microphones, speakers, podia, projectors, and screens).  Also assists in the planning, coordination, and operation of special events and videoconferencing needs between Classroom Services and ATUS Video Services. 

Your responsibilities will include: 

In an assistive role, this position manages the inventory, maintenance, logistical support, and checkout of portable media equipment. This position also provides tier-1 technical support and advice for users of classroom AV equipment, desktop computers, or laptop computers. 

As the Classroom AV Technician, you will: 

  • Provide courteous, effective, and timely customer service;  

  • Collaboratively and supportively direct the work of student team members; 

  • Respond to and resolve routine equipment circulation issues and inquiries;   

  • Guide student and faculty clients in selecting and using appropriate AV equipment;  

  • Troubleshoot equipment such as cameras, lenses, audio recorders to insure their functionality and readiness for checkout. 

  • Prepare regular reports on items contained in the loan pool. 

The State HR classification for this position is IT Customer Support - Entry.

This is a .75 position, with the option to be 30 hours/week or 9-months of full-time.

Required Qualifications
  • One year of experience (or equivalent) at a service desk providing technical expertise and demonstrating interpersonal, customer service, support, and conflict management skills. 
  • One year of experience (or equivalent) demonstrating a working knowledge of audiovisual equipment, peripherals and interconnecting cabling. This includes sound systems, microphones, projectors, lighting, and/or cameras. 
  • Certified Technology Specialist – This AVIXA certification is required at time of hire or obtained within one year of hiring. ATUS will fund the training needed to obtain this certification. 
  • Associates degree (or higher) in a technology-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 
 
 
 
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing students 
  • Experience using and managing software for equipment inventory tracking and or checkouts in a loan pool or library environments 
  • Experience with the AV needs of event support 
  • A high degree of experience with Microsoft office tools and communication tools. 
  • AV-related certification (such as AVIXA CTS)

Salary  $3,897 - $5,244/month (@.75 FTE).
